The Blood of Dawnwalker: Best Vampire Powers to Unlock First and How Blood Phials Work

Coen's vampiric side runs on Activation Charges, not mana. Here's which Vampirism powers to prioritize, how Blood Phials work, and the gear that makes night runs deadly.

Coen spends his days as a peasant with a sword and his nights as something else entirely, and The Blood of Dawnwalker builds an entire skill system around that split. The Vampirism tree only unlocks after dark, it runs on a resource called Activation Charges instead of mana, and several of its best powers cost a slice of Coen's own health to use. Picking the wrong ones early makes night fights a scramble. Here is how the tree actually works, which powers to grab first, and how Blood Phials and gear turn a shaky vampire into a genuine predator.

How the Vampirism Tree Actually Works

During daylight Coen fights like a trained swordsman with conventional weapons. After sunset his weapons retract into claws, and combat shifts to a faster, more brutal style built around momentum. Landing hits, blocking cleanly and timing parries all build Activation Charges, the resource that fuels the Vampirism tree's active abilities and finishers. Most of those abilities also burn a percentage of Coen's current health, so the tree rewards a player who is already winning a fight rather than one trying to claw back from low health.

Which Powers to Unlock First

With a limited number of early skill points, prioritize sustain and control before flashy burst damage. This order works for most starting builds:

  1. Voracious Bite - feeds off a target to restore health for one charge, and is the only reliable in-combat healing the tree offers early on.
  2. Scarlet Shield - a passive chance to regenerate health after a successful block, which pairs directly with Voracious Bite to keep Coen alive through longer fights.
  3. Shadowstorm - slows time around Coen for one charge and fifteen percent health, buying room to reposition against groups or dodge a boss combo.
  4. Crimson Rush - a passive that scales active-ability damage with current health percentage, which makes every other charge spent hit harder while Coen stays topped up.

Save Mesmerise and Piercing Shriek for once Coen has enough charge generation to spend two or three charges per fight without stalling out, and treat Blood Surge and Death from Above as finishers for regular enemies rather than core rotation tools, since bosses take reduced damage from both instead of dying outright.

Boss Blood and Blood Phials

Vrakhiri bosses, the vampire nobility Coen hunts across Vale Sangora, drop a Blood Phial when defeated. Drinking one lets Coen absorb a portion of that boss's own power and unlocks a related vampiric skill rather than a generic reward. It gives the build path a reason to seek out optional Vrakhiri encounters instead of only following the main quest chain, and it is the fastest way to round out the Vampirism tree once the base abilities are unlocked. Coen keeps the option to drink or decline each phial, so it is worth checking a skill's effect before committing a boss's blood to it.

Gear for a Night-Focused Build

Once the core tree is online, equipment does the rest of the work. A late-game vampiric loadout leans on:

  • Ambrus' Cuirass, for baseline claw survivability
  • Vrakhiric Bracers, which boost Vampiric Health restoration
  • the Corrupted Pendant, for Vampiric Ability Cooldown reduction
  • the Ring of the Night, for flat Claw Damage

Stacking cooldown reduction and health restoration on gear is what lets a player actually spend charges aggressively instead of hoarding them for emergencies, since abilities like Shadowstorm and Voracious Bite come back fast enough to use on cooldown rather than sparingly.

Managing Health Costs Without Dying to Your Own Powers

Because so much of the Vampirism kit spends health instead of a separate bar, the biggest early mistake is opening a fight with an ability that costs thirty percent health before establishing any lifesteal. Lead with a hit or two of claw damage to build Activation Charges normally, then use Voracious Bite to convert the first charge into healing before spending anything riskier. Watch the day-night boundary too: abilities lock instantly at sunrise, so mid-fight transitions into daylight can strand Coen without the tree he was relying on seconds earlier.

Pro tipKeep at least one charge banked for Scarlet Shield's block window during boss fights instead of dumping every charge on offense; the health it returns is often worth more than the extra damage.

Quick Checklist

  • Unlock Voracious Bite and Scarlet Shield before any offensive power
  • Build Activation Charges with normal claw hits, not abilities, at the start of a fight
  • Chase optional Vrakhiri bosses for Blood Phials once the core tree is filled out
  • Gear toward cooldown reduction and Vampiric Health restoration, not raw claw damage alone
  • Track the sunrise timer so a fight doesn't end with Coen suddenly human
