Pokémon Legends Z-A: How to Beat Rogue Mega Dragonite and Earn Dragoninite
Rogue Mega Dragonite guards Vert Sector 3's rooftops in Pokémon Legends Z-A. Here's how to reach it, dodge the sludge trap, and beat it for the Dragoninite Mega Stone.

Rogue Mega Dragonite is the roadblock at the end of Main Mission 32, "A Rogue Mega Dragonite," and it catches a lot of trainers under-leveled because the mission before it feels like a breather. It is not. Dragonite's base stats already sit among the best in the game, and a Mega Evolution on top of that turns a standard field encounter into one of the harder fights in Lumiose City before the postgame. Here is where to find it, what it throws at you, and how to walk away with the Dragoninite Mega Stone instead of a wipe.
Where to Find Rogue Mega Dragonite
The fight sits on the rooftops of Vert Sector 3, and the game expects you to reach it through the Wild Zone 2 gate rather than walking in from street level. Fast travel to Wild Zone 2 if you have unlocked it, or make your way to its entrance on foot.
- Stand facing the Wild Zone 2 gate, turn right, and climb the first staircase.
- At the top, turn left and walk forward until you hit a side path branching off to the right.
- A patch of purple sludge blocks that path. A Water-type move clears it instantly; Confusion works as a backup, but Psybeam does not interact with it.
- Take the yellow Holovator just past the sludge up to the rooftops.
- On the roof, turn around and climb the scaffolding behind you. An Alpha Dedenne sometimes patrols this stretch — it is skippable if you are not hunting Alpha spawns.
- Follow the rooftop path to its edge and drop down to the lower building to the north. Dragonite is pacing in the open below.
Save before you approach it. There is no second warning once the battle starts, and a bad opening turn against a Mega Pokémon can snowball fast.

What You're Up Against
Rogue Mega Dragonite is Dragon/Flying, same as its base form, and Game Freak did not give it a defensive typing to compensate for the attack stat bump Mega Evolution grants. That leaves it weak to Ice, Fairy, Rock, and Dragon-type moves, with Ice doing the most damage of the four. You will be fighting it alongside Taunie, your Team MZ ally for this mission, so you are not doing this solo — treat her Pokémon as a second attacker you can let soak a turn while you reposition or heal.
The danger here is burst, not attrition. A fully Mega Evolved Dragonite with access to Draco Meteor or Hurricane can take a fragile sweeper from full health to zero in one hit if you misjudge the matchup, so bring something that can survive a direct hit rather than something that only wins on a speed tie.
Best Counters and Team Setup
You do not need a perfectly built team to win this, but you do need at least one Pokémon that resists both of Dragonite's STAB types and hits back with something it is weak to. A few options that consistently come up in cleared runs:
- Gardevoir — Fairy-type STAB plus Psychic coverage, and it can Mega Evolve itself if you have unlocked that stone.
- Clefable — high special bulk, Fairy typing, and reliable recovery if you have taught it Moonlight or similar.
- Dedenne — Fairy/Electric gives it a clean resistance profile against Dragonite's common moves, though its HP is thin.
- Any Ice-type attacker with Ice Beam or Icicle Spear — the 4x weakness means even a mediocre Ice move does serious damage.
Avoid leading with Rock-types on their own. Several of the common Rock-type picks in this stretch of the game are also part Ground, Steel, or Water, and those secondary typings either do nothing extra to Dragonite or actively invite a bad trade if it has coverage moves.

Battle Strategy
Open with a status move if you have one that lands reliably — paralysis slows down Dragonite's turn order advantage, and sleep takes it out of the fight for a few turns outright. From there, rotate your Ice or Fairy attacker in, chip it down, and swap to a bulkier Pokémon with Protect when you expect a big hit, particularly after you see the Mega Evolution animation trigger if Taunie's side provokes it early.
Keep your bag stocked before you walk up. Full Restores or a mix of Potions and status healers matter more here than in most story fights, because Dragonite's move pool punishes you for standing still and tanking hits on principle.
After the Fight: Using Dragoninite
Winning hands you the Dragoninite Mega Stone. Give it to your own Dragonite as a held item from the bag menu, and once its Mega Energy gauge fills in battle, you Mega Evolve it with a press of R3, same as any other Mega-capable Pokémon in your box. If you have not caught a Dragonite yet, the overworld spawns in the higher-numbered Wild Zones around level 64 to 65 are worth a detour before you commit a build to it.
This is one stop in a longer chain of Rogue Mega encounters scattered across Lumiose City's districts, each gating a different Mega Stone behind a boss fight with its own typing puzzle. If you have not unlocked Mega Evolution yet, our guide to getting your first Mega Stone covers the earlier step you need before any of this is available.
