Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Beginner Tips: Best Perks to Pick and Mistakes to Avoid

A beginner-friendly breakdown of Black Ops 7 perk categories, Hybrid Specialties and the five most common loadout and movement mistakes that cost new players their first few matches.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has been out since November 2025, but the perk system Treyarch rebuilt for it still trips up new players more than any gun or map. Tactical Sprint got pulled out of the default kit and folded into a perk, aiming down sights while sliding or wall jumping used to require a specific pick, and the three perk categories interact in ways the game never fully explains in its menus. None of it is complicated once you see the shape of it, and getting it right in your first few hours saves you several levels of frustration.

Pick one perk category before you touch the others

Perks in Black Ops 7 are split into three colored categories: Enforcer (red, built around aggression and ammo), Recon (blue, built around stealth and information), and Strategist (green, built around support and field upgrades). Each category fills three slots, and running three perks from the same category unlocks a Mono Specialty bonus, while mixing two from one category with a third from another unlocks a Hybrid Specialty instead. New players tend to grab whatever perk sounds strongest in each slot without noticing they just gave up a Specialty bonus they would have gotten for staying consistent. Decide early whether you want to play aggressive (Enforcer), play quiet (Recon), or play around your squad (Strategist), and build your first loadout inside that lane.

Official details on how the Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies modes connect are in Treyarch's multiplayer deep dive, which is worth a read before you start customizing loadouts.

The two perks that matter most at low levels

Two perks solve problems you will hit in your first session. Dexterity reduces weapon sway and lets you keep a full aim-down-sights picture while sliding, diving, or wall jumping, and it knocks down fall damage on top of that, which matters once you start chaining Omnimovement's wall jumps. Tac Sprinter is the other one: Treyarch moved Tactical Sprint out of the default kit and raised base movement speed instead, so Tac Sprinter is how you get those sprint bursts back, at the cost of your normal running speed. Neither is mandatory, but running one of them in your first slot removes the two most common complaints new players have about how the movement feels.

  • Dexterity — full ADS while sliding, diving and wall jumping, plus reduced fall damage.
  • Tac Sprinter — restores tactical sprint bursts, trades off base sprint speed.
  • Flak Jacket — a set-and-forget pick that blunts trap and equipment damage while you learn the maps.
  • Fast Hands — nearly essential if you run Overkill, since it speeds up the swap between your two primaries.

Mistakes that cost new players the most games

A few habits separate a rough first week from a smooth one:

  1. Firing unsuppressed near the minimap's edge. Showing up on the minimap is one of the fastest ways to get third-partied on Black Ops 7's tighter maps. A suppressor on your primary costs a small amount of range and damage range, and it is worth it while you are still learning sightlines.
  2. Running Overkill without Fast Hands. Carrying two primaries is strong, but a slow swap animation gets you killed during the gap. Pair Overkill with Fast Hands or skip it until you unlock that perk.
  3. Ignoring the Assault Pack field upgrade. New players chew through ammo faster than they expect in Black Ops 7's longer gunfights. Assault Pack resupplies you and your squad without walking back to a loadout crate.
  4. Skipping Deathmatch to learn new weapons. Objective modes punish mistakes immediately. Leveling a new gun in Deathmatch first, where deaths cost you less tempo, is the faster way to unlock its attachments.
  5. Treating perk slots as separate choices. Picking perks slot by slot without checking whether they share a category throws away a free Hybrid or Mono Specialty bonus for no reason.

Pro tipIf you have not hit level 10 yet and cannot unlock your preferred SMG, use the Operative default loadout to level it in the background while you play your main class, so it is ready the moment it unlocks.

Where to go from here
