How to Beat the Hollow Sovereign Without Losing Your Mind
The Sovereign punishes greed. Learn his three phases, the safe windows after each slam, and the one summon that trivializes phase two.

The Hollow Sovereign is the first real wall in Ashen Throne. He has more health than anything before him, hits through most shields, and his second phase adds a stagger mechanic the game never explained. This guide breaks the fight into three phases with exact punish windows.
Before you enter
Bring at least 8 Ember Flasks and a weapon with Holy scaling. The Dawnbreaker greatsword is the easiest pick and drops two zones earlier. If you're running a build below level 45, farm the Cinder Knights outside the cathedral first.
- Equip the Ward of Silence talisman. It halves the damage of his scream.
- Summon Sister Odile at the fog gate. She draws aggro for the entire second phase.
- Remove heavy armor. Rolling speed matters more than poise here.
Phase one: the slam cycle
Every combo ends with an overhead slam. Roll toward his left leg, not away, and you get a clean two-hit window. Do not go for a third hit. Greed is how this fight kills you. Repeat this until he drops to 65%, when he kneels and the arena floor cracks.
Phase two: the stagger trick
With Odile holding his attention, charge heavy attacks into his back. Three charged hits trigger a stagger, and the critical that follows removes roughly 20% of his health. Community testing on the Ashen Throne wiki confirms this works on every difficulty.
Phase three: finish it
At 20% he sheds the crown and gains a grab. The grab has a long wind-up and a bright flash. Roll on the flash, then commit everything. He has no more tricks. Once he falls, grab the Sovereign's Remembrance before the cutscene; it does not respawn.
