ARC Raiders: How to Beat Bastion, the Heaviest Armored ARC Machine

Bastion's thick front armor turns frontal fights into damage sponges. Here's how to expose its rear plate and leg joints, the loadout to bring, and what it drops when it goes down.

Bastion is the ARC machine that stops a good raid cold. It is a slow, tank-legged gatling gun with armor thick enough to shrug off a full magazine fired at its chest, and it tends to show up right next to the resource deposits worth stopping for. Here is how to actually take one down instead of burning your whole loadout on a wall of plating.

What Bastion is and where it shows up

Bastion is a heavy-armor ARC built around a front-mounted minigun. It is slow and ground-bound, so it cannot chase you down the way a Leaper can, but it hits hard at range and its screech before a gatling burst is your cue to get behind cover fast. It spawns guarding high-value salvage on several maps, including Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Blue Gate, Stella Montis and the Spaceport. It rarely patrols alone: Wasps and Hornets often fly escort, and both will keep shooting at you while you try to focus the bigger target.

Bring heavy ammo and a plan for the small stuff first

Clear the escort before you commit to the main fight. A Wasp goes down to a couple of impact grenades or a focused burst at its rotors, and a Hornet is easiest to deal with the moment it telegraphs its electric dart attack. Once the airspace is clear, Bastion becomes a straightforward damage check rather than a juggling act. Pack heavy ammo if your loadout allows it, and bring a shotgun for close engagements, since every pellet counts against its side and rear plating. Fight from cover that lets you peek from both directions so Bastion cannot pin you down while it reloads.

How to expose and destroy its weak points

The front is a dead end. Its thick frontal plating absorbs almost everything you throw at it head-on, so trade positioning for damage instead:

  • Shoot the legs to buckle its knees. A staggered Bastion tips its upper section forward, briefly exposing the midsection underneath.
  • Circle to the rear and target the bright yellow cylindrical canister. Destroying it pops the rear hull plate and opens a clean line to the internals.
  • Once a weak point is showing, dump your heaviest damage into it immediately; Bastion pivots to track you, so these windows close fast.
  • Use its reload pause, which follows every gatling burst, to step out of cover and land free hits without eating return fire.

Treat the fight as a loop: strip the legs, bait a pivot, punish the exposed core, then reset to cover before the next burst starts. Rushing a weak point the moment it appears usually costs more health than it is worth if Bastion is still mid-turn toward you.

Pro tipFight Bastion with your back to a doorway or shipping container rather than open ground. You want a hard break in line of sight you can duck behind the instant it screeches, not just distance.

Squad fights are faster, solo fights are safer

With a full squad, split up so Bastion cannot face more than two Raiders at once. One or two players bait its front while the rest flank for the rear canister, and the fight usually ends in under a minute once the legs are stripped. Solo, patience matters more than damage output. Pick a single flank, commit to the leg-and-canister rotation, and do not try to tank a burst to finish it off early. A Bastion you walk away from and come back to with a different angle is better than one that kills you at 20 percent health.

What it drops and why the grind is worth it

A destroyed Bastion is one of the better heavy-ARC payouts in the game. Expect ARC Alloy, ARC Circuitry, ARC Motion Core, Advanced ARC Powercell and a Bastion Cell from the kill itself, with Mechanical Components and extra Powercells as secondary drops if you take the time to scavenge the wreck. Bastion Cells specifically matter beyond crafting value: they are the turn-in item for quests that ask for proof you dropped a heavy ARC, so a single successful fight can clear a quest objective and restock your crafting materials in the same trip.

Quick checklist before you engage

  1. Confirm the map, not just the ARC: check our rundown of what changed with the Frozen Trail update if you are raiding the newer zones, since spawn patterns shift between seasons.
  2. Clear Wasps and Hornets first so you are not fighting three targets at once.
  3. Pick a flank and commit to the leg-and-rear rotation rather than trading frontal shots.
  4. Loot the wreck fully. The secondary drops are worth the extra ten seconds of exposure.

None of this requires a maxed-out loadout. Bastion punishes raiders who stand still and trade hits more than it punishes undergeared ones, so a careful fight with mid-tier gear will usually beat a reckless one with top-tier gear. Check ARC Raiders' official site and the game's Steam page for current patch status before you head out, since weak points and drop tables have shifted before with balance updates. Background on the game itself is on Wikipedia, and the ESRB's parents' guide covers its violence and in-game purchase ratings for anyone checking before letting a younger player load in.
