Pokémon Legends Z-A: How to Beat Rogue Mega Absol and Claim the Absolite

AZ hands you his Lucario and nothing else for this fight. Here is how to read Rogue Mega Absol's area attacks, trigger your own Mega Evolution and claim the Absolite.

Rogue Mega Absol is the first boss fight of Pokémon Legends: Z-A's main story, and the one that teaches you how the game's Rogue Mega Evolution battles actually work. It shows up during the "Chase That Mysterious Pokémon" mission, after Zygarde drags you across Lumiose City to find an Absol in obvious pain moments before it Mega Evolves against its will. You don't get to pick your own team for this one. AZ hands you his Lucario, and that's the only Pokémon allowed in the fight.

Where to find Rogue Mega Absol

You won't stumble into this fight by accident. It triggers as part of the story once Zygarde leads you to the southeastern edge of Lumiose City, around the Juane District. Follow the prompts to interact with the corrupted Absol, and the battle starts automatically. There's no way to grind or re-gear beforehand beyond what the story has already given you, so don't worry about under-preparing; the fight is built around whatever level you've reached naturally by this point in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Absol's stats, weaknesses and attacks

This Mega Absol is fought at level 25, with base stats of 65 HP, 150 Attack, 60 Defense, 115 Special Attack, 60 Special Defense and 115 Speed. Pure Dark-typing gives it a predictable set of answers:

  • Weak to: Bug, Fairy and Fighting
  • Resists: Ghost and Dark
  • Immune to: Psychic

Absol leans on three moves. Slash is a basic close-range hit you'll eat constantly if you don't keep moving. Air Slash is a quick, directional wind attack that punishes standing still at range. The one that actually matters is its charged area attack: Absol winds up for a moment, then releases a blast around itself. The radius grows once it drops below 50 percent health, and its final, lowest-HP version of the attack nearly reaches the edge of the arena, so repositioning early becomes mandatory in the back half of the fight.

AZ's Lucario is your only option

Since Lucario is forced, your entire plan comes down to using its kit well. Fighting and Steel typing lines up perfectly against a Dark-type target, and its moveset is built for exactly this matchup:

  • Rock Smash – Fighting-type STAB that deals super effective damage and can chip Absol's Defense.
  • Bullet Punch – a fast, priority Steel-type hit for squeezing in extra damage between dodges.
  • Aura Sphere – a ranged Special Fighting move for when you need to hit Absol without closing the distance.
  • Protect – cuts incoming damage when you can't fully escape an attack.

How to beat Rogue Mega Absol step by step

  1. Open with Rock Smash and Bullet Punch while they're off cooldown; both land super effective hits.
  2. Watch for Absol's windup animation before its area attack and create distance immediately. If you run, Lucario follows automatically.
  3. While your main attacks are on cooldown, switch to Aura Sphere so you're never standing idle in Absol's range.
  4. Collect the Mega Power orbs that scatter off Absol as you land hits; the meter fills faster the more you attack.
  5. Once the meter in the bottom right is full, trigger Lucario's own Mega Evolution to even out the damage race.
  6. Keep attacking and collecting orbs after Mega Evolving, since the meter drains over time and running it out reverts Lucario early.
  7. Past the 50 percent health mark, give Absol's area attack extra room; its blast radius is noticeably bigger from here on.

Pro tipUse Protect the instant you see Absol's charge animation if you're too close to dodge cleanly. It won't stop all the damage, but it buys enough time to reposition before the blast actually lands.

What you get for winning

Beating Rogue Mega Absol hands you the Absolite, the Mega Stone that lets your own Absol Mega Evolve in future fights, including the Rogue Mega Slowbro and Rogue Mega Banette battles later in the story. The wild Absol you just saved also joins your party afterward, out of gratitude for breaking the Rogue Mega Evolution's hold on it. It's the only Rogue Pokémon in the game you get to recruit this way, which makes this fight worth getting right even if you're tempted to brute-force it.
