Season of Hell's Legacy went live on September 15 and it is built around Diablo's 30th anniversary, so almost everything in it is either a nostalgia hit or a genuine quality-of-life fix. If you are jumping in fresh or dusting off an Eternal character, the season rewards a bit of planning before you start clicking. Here is what actually matters in the first few hours: which build gets you to level 60 fastest, what to spend your early currency on, and the mistakes that waste the most time.
What Hell's Legacy Actually Changes
The seasonal questline sends you after Splinters of Diablo, Baal and Mephisto, and each one grants a temporary Iconic Power that reshapes your kit while you carry it. Nine new Legacy Uniques land as permanent additions to both Seasonal and Eternal realms, Mythic crafting gets a deterministic upgrade recipe, and the Horadric Cube picks up an Affix Value Reroll that protects your Greater Affixes instead of nuking them. If you want the full breakdown of the questline and the balance changes, our season launch recap covers it in more detail than we have room for here.

Pick a Leveling Build You Can Finish, Not a Perfect One
Season start is not the time to chase an endgame pushing build. You have no tempers, no aspects and no Paragon board, so the build that levels fastest is whichever one survives while you outrun the campaign's early scaling. Six builds are opening the season in S-tier for leveling specifically:
- Rogue, Dance of Knives — widely considered the single strongest leveling setup this season
- Barbarian, Whirlwind — near-permanent uptime and easy Fury generation
- Necromancer, Minionmancer — your minions tank while you stay mobile
- Sorcerer, Blizzard with Static Field — reliable crowd control from range
- Spiritborn, Stinger — fast clear speed with forgiving positioning
- Warlock, Blazing Scream — the new class's strongest early-game option
Builds marked as getting free aspects from the seasonal journey get an extra boost, since you will have those aspects unlocked before you would normally farm them. Pick one, commit to it through the campaign, and only start theorycrafting an endgame variant once you hit World Tier 4.
Early Mistakes That Cost the Most Time
A few habits from previous seasons will actively slow you down in Hell's Legacy:
- Fully socketing gear before level 50. Gems and Splinters get replaced constantly early on, so save your Ancestral resources for gear you will keep.
- Ignoring War Plans. The activity tree now shares Renown-style progress across every character in the same Eternal/Seasonal and Hardcore partition, so running a plan on your main benefits future alts too.
- Selling Legacy Unique drops without checking them. Some of the nine new Uniques carry build-defining Jewelry effects rather than raw stats, and a few are only good once you understand what their Charm form does.
- Grinding Nightmare Dungeons before finishing the campaign. The campaign's own rewards and the seasonal Iconic Powers make early Nightmare farming slower, not faster, until you have a full skill bar.
Spend Smoldering Ashes on Season Blessings First
Smoldering Ashes come from Season Ranking and unlock permanent, account-wide Season Blessings for the rest of Hell's Legacy. Two are worth prioritizing immediately: the Urn of Curiosities, which boosts your odds of a second item from the Purveyor of Curiosities, and the Urn of Ancestral Whispers, which raises the chance of an Ancestral Cache when you turn in Whispers. Both pay for themselves within your first few Helltide runs. The Urn of Masterworking and Urn of Reclamation matter more once you are already gearing at World Tier 4, so they can wait.

Use the Mechanics Built for New and Returning Players
Blizzard leaned into the anniversary framing by making the season friendlier to jump into than most. All Unique items now drop starting at character level 1, on any difficulty, so a lucky early Helltide or Nightmare Dungeon can hand you a build-defining item well before you would normally see one. Legendary drop rates are also up across Torment I through V, which matters if you are rushing an Eternal character through Rebirth, a new feature that resets an existing character to level 1 on the Seasonal realm while keeping its class, name, appearance and Hardcore status. If you have a high-playtime Eternal character you never took seasonal, Rebirth is the cleanest way to bring it into Hell's Legacy without starting completely from scratch.
Quick Start Checklist
- Lock in one of the S-tier leveling builds before you start the campaign, not after
- Clear the seasonal journey's early tracks for free skill points and gold
- Save Ancestral resources instead of fully socketing pre-level-50 gear
- Spend your first Smoldering Ashes on the Urn of Curiosities and Urn of Ancestral Whispers
- Use Rebirth if you have an Eternal character you want to bring into the season
None of this requires a perfect plan on day one. Hell's Legacy is generous enough with free power that a rough build and a bit of discipline about where you spend your first currency will get you through the campaign and into Torment difficulties faster than agonizing over the ideal setup.
