Marvel's Wolverine: Best Techniques and Adaptations to Unlock First
Logan's Techniques, Adaptations, Rage tiers and suit crafting all shape how tough Marvel's Wolverine feels early. Here is what to unlock first, and when to actually spend Rage on healing instead of offense.

Marvel's Wolverine is out now on PS5, and Logan's moveset is bigger than a single afternoon can absorb. Insomniac splits his growth across two systems, Techniques and Adaptations, plus a suit-crafting loop that quietly controls how much health you actually have. Here is what to prioritize in the first few hours so you are not still fumbling with the basics by the third boss fight.
Techniques: the moves you actually throw
Techniques are Logan's combat moveset. There are 36 nodes to unlock across a single playthrough (40 once New Game Plus adds the Unstoppable Force branch), and you can equip up to four Special Techniques at a time. Three worth grabbing early: Tornado Spin clears a cluster of enemies who have you surrounded, Knee Breaker stops an armored Reaver's guard cold, and Spiral Strike punches through a single tough target fast. None of them cost Rage to trigger, so they are free tools the moment you unlock them, and swapping loadouts between fights costs nothing.

Adaptations: the DNA skill tree that shapes your run
Adaptations sit on a separate, DNA-styled tree and work passively rather than as button presses. Dozens are available, and the smart early picks are the ones that keep you alive rather than the ones that pad damage: an Adaptation that lets Logan absorb more gunfire, one that widens the parry timing window, and one that makes nearby enemies flinch or flee when he pops a Rage tier. Wolverine heals through pain rather than avoiding it, so anything that buys extra seconds in a firefight pays off more than raw claw damage in the opening hours.
Rage tiers and when to actually heal
Every hit landed, parry timed, and kill scored fills a single Rage meter split into three tiers: Survivability, Resilience, and Fury, each one unlocking heavier attacks and a more brutal finishing animation than the last. Climbing tiers fast means chaining kills without letting the combo drop, and dropping out of combat resets you back to the bottom tier, so it pays to clear a room in one continuous push rather than picking enemies off one at a time. The instinct is to spend Rage healing the moment you take damage, but that is usually the wrong call. Rage also powers stronger combos and Critical Strikes, so the efficient pattern is to spend it on offense first and lean on Last Stand, Logan's channel-a-Rage-tier heal, only when he is genuinely close to going down. Burning Rage on chip damage just slows down fights that would have ended on their own anyway.
Suits control your max health, not just your look
The suits are cosmetic in that they do not change combat stats individually, but crafting them is how Logan's health pool grows. Material comes from the 68 Material Crates scattered through the game, and every suit crafted, or auto-unlocked through the story, adds a percentage to max health, from 100 percent at one suit up to 200 percent once you have crafted all 20. The curve is not linear: the jumps get bigger later, especially between 16 and 20 suits, so it is worth detouring for Material Crates near a suit unlock rather than saving them for later.

What to do in the first few hours
- Unlock Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker and Spiral Strike before pushing into story missions with large enemy groups.
- Spend your first Adaptation points on survivability, bullet absorption and parry window, before damage boosts.
- Farm nearby Material Crates on sight. Suit crafting is the only way to raise max health.
- Save Last Stand for genuine near-death moments instead of topping off chip damage.
None of this locks you into a build. Techniques can be freely swapped between encounters and Adaptations can be respecced, so there is little risk in experimenting once the early survivability picks are in place.
